Sportsday Megaphone - So Many Colours/So Little Time (Album)

So, no 'New Music Monday (or Tuesday)'. You're probably thinking i'm dead, thankfully i'm not although 'Shitronic Goes Brown' is (more on that later) but i couldn't get Resident's link to work so i have no idea what's out this week.

This album is a few weeks old and the reason for its delay in appearance on here is the fact that i didn't think it was worthy on the first couple of listens, however, having listened to it again today i am pleased to announce that i was wrong about Sportsday Megaphone's debut.

"So Many Colours/So Little Time" is the work of one man with an obvious penchant for the sounds that retro games consoles make. Most of the songs are based around riffs that sound like they've been lifted straight out of computer games from the late 80s. Although that's a rather lazy description of his sound and one i've heard applied to countless other bands that subsequently turned out to be really poorly produced tracks filtered through an 8 bit chip with more attention paid to the lo-fi asthetic than the quality of the music. Thankfully Sportsday Megaphone are not one of these bands and create well produced, crisp tracks whilst managing to capture the nostalgia of childhoods spent (wasted?) watching your best friend trying to complete Alex the Kid. As with a lot of the music featured on this blog this is an album that exudes an aura of awkward youth, charming naivety and intense, beautiful relationships. "So Many Colours/So Little Time" captures this perfectly and yet lacks no maturity with songs like 'L.A.'- a furious ball of hate, poking holes with a sharp stick in the outward appearance of this glitzy, glamorous area of America - and the album's progression from a Sega soundtrack into a far more live sounding affair with real guitars and bass providing an accompaniment to the trademark blips and blops. If you enjoyed the Metronomy album that i reviewed before you'll probably find this to your liking as well. Yes it is 'wonky pop' (my most overused, non-existent genre?) and also 'unlikely dance' (soon to be a hot contender for the same title) and probably not for every ear which is yet another reason for liking it.

The song i've picked from this album is 'Less and Less' which i've been listening to ever since it came out on I Can Count Vol. 2. I Can Count happen to be very good at putting out cool compilation CDs of wonky pop and electronica as well as running a record label and clothes shop that sell an awesome range of T-shirts (often sported by yours truly - trust me they're real conversation starters) and other weird things like Tetris block cushions for your armchair and a SNES belt buckle. Listen to it once and if you don't like it then listen to it 3 more times and make up your mind then.
